An undercover ATF agent named Robert Rodriguez, using the name “Robert Gonzalez,” had been assigned to go undercover inside the compound. He’d attended some Bible studies and chatted up David and the other believers. On February 17, he was invited inside the compound to attend another Bible session.

Rodriguez found David to be super friendly. The devil could walk up to his front door and David would welcome him, try to get him in the message. For his part, Steve Schneider assumed Rodriguez and his buddies across the road were ATF or FBI. He felt like saying, “Come on, Robert, we know you’re an agent. You can’t believe we’re that stupid.”

After his visit, Robert started taking target practice in the yard of the surveillance house, hoping that David would see him and invite him over to shoot. On February 19, David did just that. Robert brought along another agent. When David greeted the pair, both of whom had brought along their AR-15s, he told Robert he’d seen him through his binoculars, firing his rifle.

The men walked to the shooting range. David had two Sig Sauer handguns and a Ruger 10/22 rifle. Rodriguez had brought his .38 with him as well, and David gave it a close look. David was intrigued by the gun. Robert claimed not to know that much about firearms, said he’d just bought the AR. But his .38 wasn’t a novice’s weapon. It had a compensator, a device that keeps the muzzle down after firing and decreases the recoil, allowing for faster shooting.

The AR was cherry, too. It had a real nice scope on it, and a one and seven twist to the barrel, which is a military spec. That twist helped the gun stabilize for tracers and heavier bullets. The thing was set up nice. Maxed out.

David tested the trigger pull. A normal pull on an AR was maybe four pounds. This thing was a pound and a half, maybe two. Delicate.

“This is a sniper rifle,” he said to Robert.

David walked off fifteen yards and set up some cans, stepped back and told Robert to hit them. Robert could feel David’s eyes on him, sizing up his stance. Robert shot and hit most of his targets.

It was a nice result. Watching David, Robert saw that he was peeved. Clearly, he didn’t like to be outshone in front of his people. “Next time I better miss,” Robert thought.

Robert went back a few more times in the next week and a half. David was open about his guns. He even talked about hellfire triggers and drop-in sears, a part that converts semiautomatic guns to full auto.

One of David’s rocker buddies came to check out the compound while Robert was there. The rocker asked one of the Davidians, “Who’s that?” The Davidian said it was a guy who was coming to Mount Carmel for the Bible studies. David overheard this. “Yeah, right,” he said. The rocker took that to mean that David knew Robert wasn’t a Bible student at all, that he had another motive for being there.
